The Sunflower Seed Queen, Kindra Mason

The Sunflower Seed Queen, Kindra Mason

By Alexandra Kern, ENGL 336.001

Born and raised in Lanham, Maryland, Kindra Mason was brought into this world on May 7, 1990. She was taken care of by her mother as an only child. “Anyone that can raise a child on their own is amazing”, remarked Kindra as a smile came to her face with the mention of the woman she admires the most. She shows a lot of gratitude towards her grandma and uncle for helping raise her as well.

As a second semester junior, Kindra is ambitiously attacking a double major in English and Psychology. Although she is not completely sure what she wants to do with her degrees, she believes the foundation that college has given her will help her succeed in life. Kindra has only found Frostburg difficult in its options for healthy food on campus. She has been a vegetarian for four years. “I make an amazing tofu stir fry,” she proudly boasts. Kindra keeps a special place in her heart for Italian food. However, her favorite thing to eat is sunflower seeds. “I can eat sunflower seeds all the time, nonstop,” says Kindra as she laughs at her harmless addiction.

One thing she is not addicted to is long and dirty fingernails. “Clean hands are important,” she says, as she slyly takes a look at her own fingers. Another one of Kindra’s pet peeves is judgmental people. She can not stand someone thinking they have the right to question someone else’s actions or morals. Kindra’s morals seem to be very high and strong. She does not like a lot of rap music because she thinks too much of it is degrading. “There is no reason to call a woman the things some of those rappers refer to them as,” Kindra says with confidence.

As shy as Kindra seems, she radiates a kind of positivity that will get her far in life. She is the happiest when she sees other people happy. Her cat is also a big reason she keeps a smile on her face. “I love seeing my loved ones smile, oh and my cat, I love my cat more than anything”, Kindra states with assurance. Other than playing with her cat, Kindra is an avid crochet whiz. She enjoys making little animal figures out of yarn. Sims is something she spends a lot of time on as well. Sims is an interactive video game with the user creating a family of people and controlling their every move. When it comes to television, Kindra loves the Golden Girls. She is convinced she has seen almost every episode and wishes the show still existed.

With Kindra’s tastes and hobbies, it is obvious that she is a relaxed and well-rounded individual with a great outlook on life. “Sometimes things can really suck, but they can only break you if you let them”, she says with pride. With three summers being spent working at the Library of Congress and her high expectations of herself as a student, Kindra is on a good road, to an even better future.
