And the Academy Award Goes to... Allie Kern

by Kindra Mason, ENGL 336:001

The very bright and bubbly Allie Kern recently celebrated her 20th birthday on August 29th. She was raised an only child in Rising Sun, MD, but has a half-sister in Texas who is about 15 years older. During her 10th year of high school she transferred schools. She graduated from North East High School, but didn't care much for the place and wished she hadn't changed schools. When she isn't doing classwork for her mass communication major or her journalism minor she likes to spend her time playing soccer, doing arts and crafts (her favorite is making jewelry), running, reading, spending time with her sorority sisters, and doing hair and makeup. She wanted to pursue hair and makeup when she was younger, but decided against it at her parents' wishes. Allie doesn't watch much television, but does enjoy shows like CSI and Criminal Minds. She likes shows that are more reality based because they are more interesting. Unlike most 20 year olds, Allie says, she likes watching the news. She thinks staying aware of current events is important. She will know soon of an internship opportunity in Cumberland, MD at a radio station. Her taste in music says a lot about her personality. She says she likes everything and then paused and giggled and went on to say, "that's pretty much the kind of person I am in general."

Allie's first job was a soccer referee at the age of 14 and her most recent job was waitressing at Captain Chris' Crab Shack. When talking about her work experiences she said, "I like to work." She says that her, "lifetime goal is to be an actress and win an Academy Award." Her favorite films to watch are dramas and serious topics because you can learn something about life. Allie reassures that she's "not a serious person- at all, but likes serious movies."

Allie says that her pet peeves are strange smells. She says mess is okay, but smells "freak me out." This has become a problem seeing as she lives on Bowery St with two families of skunks as neighbors. Allie's completely positive outlook on life is apparent after talking to her for only an hour. The things that make her happy are seeing people smile and sunshine. She said she likes to make people smile and laugh whenever she can. Her biggest inspiration in her life is her mom. Why? "Because she's my mom... I love my parents. I think they're awesome. My mom has never given up on me." Allie speaks the highest praises of her mom and says she has learned her most valuable life lesson (this far) from her mom. When her mom told her, "If you're not completely sure, don't do it" and it just stuck with her.
