The Exceptional Vincent Morton Jr.

By Racheal Myers, ENGL 336.002
Vincent “Vince” Rudolph Morton Jr. was born in Washington, DC on August 9, 1990. He grew up in Prince Georges County, Maryland, where he currently lives in Temple Hills. Some things that may interest you about Vince? He describes himself as having a “dynamic“ personality, and the ability to fit into any circle. His pet peeves are closed minded people, and people who chew with their mouths open. He admits that his main weakness is being lazy at times, and that this has interfered with his schoolwork on more than one occasion.

Something else you need to know about Vince? He’s a big dude. So it’s no surprise that he played football for his high school varsity team as a defensive lineman, and from the way he tells it, he was pretty good at it. In fact, when asked what his favorite memory was, he spoke of a varsity game when he was 16 or 17 years old, “I loved playing football. My first time starting on varsity, I went off that game, had a great game”. Turns out, he pushed a player on the opposing team 5 yards back. Not too shabby. Just the opposite, to hear his list of accomplishments, its not hard to see that Vince is one exceptional guy.

From an early age, Vince was encouraged to be exceptional. He was taught at age 4 to read, by his mother, and tested in a high percentile in English throughout his academic career. He knew he had the imagination and creativity to do well as an English major, and has since gone on to perform one of his biggest achievements, obtaining a 4.0 GPA his sophomore year here at Frostburg State University.

Vince credits his mother, a 1984 Frostburg graduate and former reading recovery teacher, who passed away in 2007, for his continued success. She is a driving force in Vince’s life, a woman who, in Vince’s words, “when I asked for help, she would lead and encourage me.” It is his eagerness to make her proud that propels him to be exceptional and has led to his motto: “Anything that leads to my betterment, I try to go after”.

When he ultimately graduates with his masters degree in teaching, Vince hopes to help change the lives of others, “If I can find deserving people, I will help them. Don’t just stop on Christmas or Thanksgiving, it should happen all the time”. In the long term, he says he doesn’t “desire notoriety, but I do wanna leave my mark”. A star on the field and in the classroom with the aspiration to help his fellow man. Exceptional.
