A closer look at Ms. Racheal Myers
By Vincent Morton, Jr, Engl 336.002
She sat like a person who had been through some of life's tougher challenges. Ms. Myers, who grew up in Greenbelt, Md, had a slight smile on her face, but was still a little reluctant of posture, like a person who had just come out from under an oppressive situation. She had recently ended a long relationship in which she was coerced into adopting her partner's hobbies, and dropping her own. She exhaled and said of her new freedom, "Things are looking up". Born April 15, 1986, this 25 year old woman seemed excited about individually exploring what she wanted out of life. She had some interesting preferences, hobbies, and other tidbits of information. She said her favorite food is peanut butter and raspberry jelly. She has three pets; a pit-bull named Frosty, and two cats named Rupert and Moo. She has a sister named Rebecca who turns 22 in November. Her favorite movie is The Breakfast Club. She is a self- proclaimed "boring person". She is an English- Professional Writing major. She is a junior, credit wise, but has been in school for 7 years. She is not married, nor does she have any children. Her most fond memory is sledding down the big hill behind her elementary school. She seems like a pretty chill person.
Her academic career has been an interesting quest. She, like most people, has had to endure some hardships in pursuit of her education. No one in her family attended college. Her mother was a high school graduate, and her father was a high school dropout. She had to find her own path to achieving her goals of obtaining a higher education. Her family is not well off, so school funding was up to her. She attended Prince Georges Community College with the hopes of finishing their two year program and transferring to Bowie State or Frostburg State. She confesses that she "met a boy", and got sidetracked. Two years turned into six. She also said she had a difficult time with the course load. With no money, having a boyfriend, and in college as a full time student, she had to live where there was space for her. She bounced from her father's house to living in the back apartment of a veterinarian’s office. She finally made it to one of the schools on her "hopeful" list. Frostburg won her heart with its small community, and professional writing major. She, like most English majors, confesses that she picked up the major because she scored high on the placement. Now, she's here enjoying herself.
She has humble and commendable hopes for her life. She does not want to be famous, but she would like to leave her mark. Her life goals are to figure out who she is, be herself, get better at public speaking, and make someone proud. She hopes to make a career out of writing children's books. She loved the way children's books could keep a child's attention. In the words of famous singer Frank Sinatra, she wants to do life "my way". On her deathbed, she wants to be able to say "it wasn't the best life moneywise; extravagance, but I did it my way". Who can argue against that?
