On September 15, 2011 at 7:30pm the Student Government Association of Frostburg State University hosted its first student government meeting. The meeting started promptly, and was called to order by the 2011 President, Mary Biscoe. She warmly greets everyone before proceeding with the meeting; she states, “Welcome everyone to the first meeting of the semester, I’d like to thank everyone for being here and supporting student government. I would also like to welcome the new senate.” This year’s student government executive board consists of the following, Madame President Biscoe, Madame Vice-President, Jasmine Clark and Mr. Treasurer, Jonathan Williams. The Student Government website also provides information on calendar events, standing committees, campus news, standing senates, and contact information.
The meeting went on and Madame President swore in the new senates and explained their new duties. Madame Vice-President spoke on campus wide committees and how she thought everyone involve in student government needed to be on a committee. Mr. Treasurer spoke on the standing accounts and financial obligations. The meeting then shifts gears the president asks for general bodies concerns, suggestions, and thoughts. The Finance chair, states, “There are four organizations here to speak on funding needed for certain events”. The organizations were, The International Relations Club, Phi Beta Sigma, LASO (Latin Student Association, and Burg Bash. The Student government briefly talked about each organizations concerns and the amount of funding they were asking for. The first organization being the International Relations club had someone on the Student Government Board represent them. The representative talked about how this organization would use the funding for sending students to Pennsylvania United Nation Conference to gain networking skills from students all over the world. He also talked about how they would bring these skills back by hosting round table discussions at Frostburg State University. Seeing that this event was much needed and would soon help all students at Frostburg, the student government granted this motion and approved the funding packet.
The second organization being Phi Beta Sigma, asked for funding of a Regional Conference in ATL. The representative was the vice-president of the organization, William Harris, who states, “On behave of the sigma’s I would like to ask for funding for the conference we attended in June”. The finance chair asks “How do you expect to bring what you learned back to the student body?” He stated, “We have our sigma week which we will be re-visiting everything we learned at the conference here at Frostburg.” The student government association again passed this motion and approved the packet. The third and last organizations proceeded with the same methods. Informing the student board of the many opportunities these events would bring to the campus and how they would benefit the minds of the youth and community.
The Student Government Association at Frostburg State University has a mission statement which states “We, the Student Government Association, are here to assist in building a foundation: to help create and maintain a university environment conducive to the richest growth of leadership, scholarship, learning, teaching, research, service and respect of others..” As you can see this student body is more concerned with making the students better and involving families, friends, and people all over the community to do so. Could it be that it is this very thing that keeps the students at Frostburg State University so close to one another. Is it the effort that these students and staff take to help fund the student union in bettering their skills, what makes it all worth it for them. Or is it the organizations that helps build up Frostburg which keep students coming in. Whatever it is I don’t think this family would be possible without the students of the Student Government Association here at FSU.
