A night filled with Hope

By: Katie Mc Auliffe

"This is a time for us to grieve and to celebrate. To look into our souls for reflection and find hope." These were some of the Inspirational words that led the hundreds gathered at the bobcat grounds at Frostburg State University into a lap of silence and reflection during the luminarium ceremony at this years 'Relay for life' event.

Even warnings for heavy rainfall and high winds couldn't quench the determination of the students that gathered on Friday, April 15th for this years Relay for life. The event which raises money and awareness for the American Cancer society began at 6pm to honor the millions of people world-wide who every day battle with their fight to overcome cancer and those who we have lost to the deadly illness.

The word 'hope' could be seen spelled out on the stadium on the night and was undoubtedly the central them for the event. It was 'hope' that gave so many people the drive and determination needed to make this event such a success, hope that the event would help make a difference, "...Hope for a world where our children and our children's children don't have to hear the words 'You have cancer', " was the inspiration given to those who gathered.

Amongst the many participants at the event from the many clubs, societies, fraternities and various organisations and groups was one student 'Megan Miner'. A junior at Frostburg State University Megan was so excited to be a part of something so special. "I'm so excited about tonight, Relay for life is one of the College events that I really support. It's such a good cause and something that means so much to me." Coming from a family where cancer has affected many people, Megan was one of the many people at the event who could personally relate to the cause. " I really want to help make a difference, and I'm going to stay out here all night."

Megan's fraternity 'Alpha Phi Omega' were amongst the many groups who set up stalls along the perimeter of the track. Making balloon animals and organizing carnival games to help raise funds were some of the things the fraternity were doing on the night to help contribute. Their banner that read "step right up" in true carnival fashion was one of many that lined the pitch. Break-dancers, hula-hoopers, soccer players, cross dressers and hackey sack throwers were also amongst the many participants on the night.

A truly generous and inspirational event, this years 'Relay for life' was a huge success, managing to raise a phenomenal $50,432.95. The organizers of the event along with the help of the many participants and supporters managed to yet again create something really special that will undoubtedly help many people and such a good cause.
