Relay for Life 2011
By Sara Maricle
On April 15, 2011, despite the impending storms and chilling temperatures, Frostburg State University's Bobcat stadium was the place to be. Hundreds of students, faculty and the community showed up to raise money for the American Cancer Society to fight against cancer. Music playing, impromptu games in the field, tents lining the field, and laughter transmitted throughout the campus from 6pm on the 15th through 6am and April 16, 2011.
Relay for life had an interesting aspect this year at Frostburg State University, nine "guys" in high heels, wigs and skirts. Nine students dress up as women for Relay for Life and competed in the Miss Relay competition, raising additional money for the cause. Each of the "guys" were from different organizations on campus and competed in evening wear and Q-A rounds along with a dance competition. Between the different competitions, the "guys" walked the track in heels among the other participants, collecting donations. Many of the female participants commented that the guys walked in the heels better than any female they know. Title of Miss Relay did however go to the stunning Misty Valentine, otherwise known as Logan Marks from the newly founded economics club.
The night was filled with a mixture of laughter and sorrow because despite the highlight of the evening, the Miss Relay competition, the hundreds of participants were still all there to help fight cancer and to remember those who have passed away from cancer.
