Frostburg University recently held the “Relay for life”; a nationwide fundraiser. “Relay for Life” is an event to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. This charity is centered on a survivor walk and a candle light vigil. Donations range from money to people giving their time and energy.
There were students from different clubs and society’s helping out. These groups set up a variety of table games so that guests could pay to play and the money went directly to the American Cancer Society. For example, the “Burg Peer Court”, an education social group, participated. A spokesperson for the “Burg Peer Court” said that they donate their time for every “Relay for Life” event and that they have members who take the relay to the ‘extreme’? It is understood that an extreme relay team is a group that tries to keep their combined walking pace close to 20mph (miles per hour).
At the ‘Peer Court’ table they sold ribbons and for every mile a participant completed a bead is added to their ribbon, for a donation. A Peer Group representative said, “A lot of people like to know how many miles they have gone. Also when they reach 18 miles they can buy a bottle cap for 2 dollars and the bottle caps have motivational words in them. All the money goes to the Relay for Life.”
Jennifer Crez, a freshman at Frostburg University, she is a member of the “Ecostars” club and this is her first time working at “Relay for Life”. She said, “I wanted to do it because it’s for a really good cause and I wanted to support all the survivors.” She is working at the ‘lazo’ table. The ‘lazo’ table game is where a player tries to knockdown a set number of bottles so that they can win a fish.
Another student who is participating is Ashley Klais. She is doing “Relay for Life” because;”my grandmother had breast cancer and I am walking for her.” She is also helping out at a table that you pay 25 cents to knock down pins and if you succeed you win a prize.
“Relay for Life” is an outstanding cause that brings people together for charitable reasons and provides awareness to a serious problem.
