Nice Day For a Relay

Despite the talk of nasty weather, Friday was a great day for a relay. Upon arrival the weather was cool, but sunny. People participated not only in the relay, but several other impromptu football, soccer, or even hackey sack games. The race started as scheduled without a hitch. As with all other Relays For Life the event began with the "survivors lap". For those who don't know or haven't attended a relay; its customary for cancer survivors to make the first lap. In the background vendors and other tents sprinkled the outer parts of the track. Everyone from teams to vendors had a tent set up.

I had the chance to stop and talk with competitor Courtney Carr. Courtney is an education major here at FSU. "I'm thrilled the weather is nice. It's a little chilly but still nice." said Carr. Courtney is a member of off campus sorority Zeta Phi. They see teamwork as a way to fight back at cancer to create a world "with less cancer and more birthdays." Their team had 18 members. They were shooting to raise $1,500 for the event. Her sorority has been fundraising all year for this relay. Carr was very excited to be a part of this event. "It feels good knowing we're supporting such a generous cause. Because I think we all know someone thats been affected by cancer." said Carr. And right she is. Unfortunately her team was only able to raise $520 falling short of their goal. But they still got out there and did an excellent job of supporting the cause.

Overall, the event was a great success. Friends, family, fellow students and what have you all congregated in support of the American Cancer Society. The weather was tolerable and actually nice at times. But most importantly out of the $53,000 goal an astounding $50,432.95 was raised. Don't forget though you can still donate until August 31, 2011. So if you have a little extra to spare consider donating to a wonderful cause. Because every little bit helps. So another Relay For Life has come and gone. Hopefully next year will be just as, if not even more successful.
