October Event Coverage: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

On Monday, November 5, 2012, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. had a probate to reveal their new members. This is a "coming out" ceremony for those who were pledging Phi Beta Sigma. The probate promptly began at 8:14 p.m. in the Armah, located in the Lane University Center at Frostburg State University. The doors opened ten minutes before eight o'clock. There were students with anxious faces everywhere. The room filled up quickly and the crowd was scrambling to get a good seat for a great show the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma were going to put on. While everyone patiently waited for the probate to start, the DJ played a few jams to get the crowd ready.

At exactly 8:14 p.m., the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma entered the room with the pledges death marching behind them. The two pledges proceeded in with their faces covered in royal blue masks and fully clothed with a hoodie, cargo pants, and royal blue boots. The crowd began to cheer and watch them take their spots on stage. You could feel the intense energy that charged the room the minute they hit the stage.

Once the crowd simmered down, they began to recite the Greek
alphabet, greetings to their prophytes, also known as big  brothers, and the greetings to "The Divine Nine." The greetings to each of the pledge's prophytes were songs that included lyrics to describe each one. Once all of the Greeks of the Divine Nine were recognized it was time for the new members of Phi Beta Sigma to reveal themselves. First to reveal his face was, sophomore Business Administration major with a focus in Marketing, Osirus Babb 18. Babb revealed himself and announced his line name as, "Scarface." Next up was, junior, Kerry Anyikude who announced his line name as, "Beowolf." By this time, the room was full of energy.

Osirus "Scarface" Babb reveals himself
Ace, Osirus Babb, now known as "Scarface," says, "It feels awesome, you get a lot of support and love from not only the people around you, but the people all over the world." Babb continues, "It's a long hard road, just knowing that you have people that love and support you, you feel like you can make it and you have to persevere and the people around you give you the motivation to persevere." When asked if this process was for everyone, Babb answered, "It's not...It really tests your strengths and how you deal with situations as a person." I asked "Scarface" what he expected from this organization now that he is a part of it and he simply said, "I expect to take over the world." He closes out saying, "I've learned that life is hard but you just have to work smart and not hard to overcome the obstacles."

This was an event worth attending and it was a moment to enjoy! Next time there is a probate here at Frostburg State University, be there or be square!
