No Question Fairness is the Answer.

Question 4: Public Institutions of Higher Education – Tuition Rates

With Election Day in full swing, an unusually low of amount of students were present in Lane University Center.  The few students that were present were more than willingly to talk. The topic of discussion was Question 4 on the election ballet. This law would allow undocumented immigrants to pay-in-state tuition after meeting several in-depth requirements.

Susan Ngo, Senior, Liberal Studies major stated “I support it; it’s not fair because they (children of illegal immigrants) didn’t have a choice to be here and it is an act of violence to enforce power on them.”  Susan furthered discussed the fairness of the law and the implementation on the innocent parties involved.

James Coppedge, Junior, International Studies major stated “I am really on the fence about it because I’m not sure how it would be implemented nationally. As far as in Maryland is concerned, I like the fact that you have to be a tax payer, which is one of my main concerns.”

Caitlin Megonigal, Senior, Mass Communication major stated “I voted for it because I believe everybody deserves an education, the people who came over here illegally is not a good thing but they still deserve an education. I believe they should pay taxes like everybody else and help fund our schools.

No question, the underlying theme of the viewpoints of the students on Question 4 was fairness.  Students’ main concerns of Question 4 were the tax paying aspect and not holding the children of illegal immigrants responsible for their parent’s decisions.
