The Best Laid Plans of Education Majors Who Become Mass Communication Majors or: How I Learned to Stop Caring and Love the Radio

For many College Freshmen, choosing a major that suits them is a difficult task. Many won’t find their desired field until they are juniors, and some jump head first into a Major, knowing from the start exactly where they want to go. After all, it is probably one of the most important decisions a student can make in their academic career. Often times, the Major a student will start out with won’t be the Major they end up with. As they go through classes, they might find that their interests weren’t what they wanted to do for a career or they might rekindle a passion from High School as a potential career path. This was the way Rebecca Signh’s decision in which Major was right for her went.

Rebecca’s mother was a driving force in her going to college. “If you don’t go to college, you better find a place to live.” Says Rebecca on what her Mother said of going to college. Rebecca’s Mother was one of the driving forces of her going to Frostburg State University.  She was wait-listed on some of her first choices for college, but the appeal of the distance from her home town and the drive of her mom kept her on the path to college. Though, besides that driving force, she insists, “I was always going to go.”

Her first choice was Education.  Rebecca admires public educators highly, “I feel that teachers are underappreciated, they do so much to mold the next generation.” Rebecca interned at a local school in her senior year of High School and found the Kindergarten class a bit too trying on the nerves. “I tried the wrong grade.” She said of that event.

When Rebecca got to Frostburg State University, she realized that she should turn her attention to radio. This was something that she had been interested in since she was in High School, but she was never very vocal about it. After speaking to a classmate about her conundrum, she decided to go into the Mass Communication Major at Frostburg State University. This is a program that has been at the back of her mind for years and something she is passionate about. Rebecca has joined the National Broadcast Society, though she even turned away from the idea of her own radio program and wants to be involved in many varying aspects of a radio show.

Rebecca Singh is a great example of digging back into your past for what you should major in at college. Sometimes, the things you think you are passionate about aren’t the things you should be training for. Perhaps we’ll hear Rebecca’s voice talking about her opinions on the life styles of teaching one day. The important thing to remember, as college students, is that we shouldn’t ever get caught up in what we think we like to do. Maybe the best way to decide what we want to do is to think back to our adolescence and work from there.
