Miss Francis Scott Key

By: Andrea Lynch, ENGL 338

Grace Herpel, from Garrett County, is a Mass Communication major with a specialization in Broadcasting and Journalism. Grace and her two brothers attended the same elementary and high school, because they are triplets, two would be in the same class while one would be in a class by themselves. "Every other year one of us got a chance to be separate", said Grace. Now, Grace and her brothers are spread apart; she attends Frostburg State University and her brothers attend two separate universities. This gives them a chance to grow individually, but separates them for a length of time.

While in High School Grace played soccer and danced. During her time as a soccer player in high school Grace received two concussions. One was from playing co-ed soccer; "I was taken out by a guy", said Grace. The second came from playing her High School's rival team. Even though things seemed a little rough for Grace with soccer, her dance teacher sparked her interest in a new way to express herself, by competing in Pageants. Grace's first pageant was for the title of Miss Deep Creek. Grace has continually competed in pageants since her senior year of High School. Even though Grace did not win the first two pageants she competed in, she continued and realized that "this is something I need to work at, it's something that is not going to come easily." With that mind set, Grace has won the title of Charm of the Chesapeake, and this past weekend Miss Francis Scott Key. Grace feels that her major and her current passion "kind of goes hand in hand"; she is able to gain connections that will be helpful in her career choice in the future.

With this passion as her main focus besides school, Grace has gained many chances to give back. She has volunteered with the Special Olympics for Maryland and taught ski lessons to the blind. "These people are doing things that others thought were off limits to them". Outside of competing for titles, Grace was a part of the Redskins cheerleaders’ spirit squad for one year and still is a mentor to youth.
