Not Just a Bystandard - An Interview with Michelle Queen

Not Just a Bystander - An Interview with Michelle Queen

By Joel Watson, ENGL 336.001

Michelle Queen is an English major here at Frostburg State University with a concentration in Creative Writing. When asked about the decision as to why she chose her major and minor she explains, “I’ve been writing things since I was five and wrote poetry in middle school.” Although it is easy to tell that she loves and enjoys English she went on to say that she may end up changing her major to marketing due to the stability issues that are included with a major in English. When she graduates she would ultimately like to get a job as a reporter for the NFL or as an on field reporter that gets to interview players at the end of the games.

Other than writing, she also enjoys watching independent movies especially “films that deal with real life issues” such as 2:37, which is a mock documentary that follows six different stories and attempts to tie the plots together much like the movie Crash does. When asked what her favorite was, Michelle, without hesitation gave the title Welcome to the Dollhouse, which is a drama about a 7th grader who is dealing with all the insecurities that come with being in middle school. The film also won a couple of independent film awards from the Sundance film festival and independent spirit awards.

Hoping to be able to nab a good internship sometime in the near future, Michelle had this to say: “ I’m semi-jobless. Hopefully I can find a writing internship before school is over. If not I’ll be stick working at H&M. It’s a good job but the customers are crazy.” She also is a strong advocate for protest against animal cruelty and strongly supports groups like ASPCA, which stands for “American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals”. Michelle says, “ I’ve always been an animal lover and lately in the news it seems like more and more sick people are just killing animals for kicks. So, whenever I do come across money I try to donate to local shelters to at least try and help out and not just be a bystander.”

In her spare time, Michelle also enjoys listening to music as well as playing first person shooter video games like Left for Dead and Modern Warfare. She enjoys any kind of music but points out that she especially enjoys listening to dub step in particular, mostly because of the heavy bass and good beats. With a little bit of reluctance she also admits that she considers herself a bit of a tomboy even though she used to be an all-star cheerleader. She likes to watch football a lot and is a strong supporter of the Baltimore Ravens.
