Katie Newlin: Settled Down and Perfectly Happy

Katie Newlin: Settled Down and Perfectly Happy

By: Caitlin Megonigal, ENGL 336.001

Katie Newlin is 22 years old and already has everything she ever wanted. Katie was born in Alexandria, Virginia and raised in Keyser, West Virginia. Currently she is a senior at Frostburg University. Before going to Frostburg she studied at Shepherd University, but switched schools in 2012 a few years after her fiancé, Matthew Brashear proposed. Transferring schools was an easy decision for Katie because but it allowed her to be closer to her fiancé . Sitting down with Katie it was obvious that family was very important to her. Though her dad left when she was young, her mom raised Katie, one of her younger sisters and older brother. Katie also has another sister from her dad’s second marriage and is just as close with her as she is with all of her other siblings. Katie Newlin and her mother are very close. During the interview she stated that, “My mom and I are best friends”. Katie said that it was not till after she graduated high school that her and her mother became really close. When asked about both her mother and father she said, “My mom’s mentality is that she rather see her kids happy, my dad would rather us behind a desk with a fancy title."

Her family also includes her finance Matthew and her three dogs that are named after Pittsburg Steelers players. Katie and Matthew have been together for 4 years and engaged for two. Her face lit up when asked about how he proposed to her. “The happiest moment in my life was when I got proposed to…we were dating for two years and were fighting a lot beforehand and I actually thought we were going to break up. But I was so happy when he asked and it actually brought us a lot closer,” said Newlin. Katie and her fiancé met through mutual friends and soon bonded over their love for motorcycles.

Katie also talked a lot about school. She just switched her major from childhood education to liberal studies. When asked why she switched and what she wanted to do with her new major, Katie said she was not sure what she wanted to do. Katie said that at one point in her college career she really enjoyed childhood education. Later in her educational career she realized that she didn't want to be a teacher, so she switched her major to liberal studies to graduate. Her next step is undecided but that does not matter to her. Katie is very happy and proud of her lifestyle. She loves her job as a waitress at Denny’s, she just bought a new house with her husband to be and she is so excited about her upcoming trip to New York with her fiancé and his parents on their motorcycles! “If you work really hard, and if you want something bad enough there are no barriers, said Katie”.
