Artist Linda Stewart wears many colorful hats

By Shawn Pillai

Linda Stewart is among the most active artists in the Cumberland area. In addition to being a mother of two, grandmother of one, and devoted wife of 34 years, Linda attends Frostburg State University as a double major in Art and English, stating that she enjoys finding new ways to combine the two subjects. She frequently tutors for the writing center at Allegany College and has even taken on the responsibility of acting as a personal note-taker for one Allegany student, attending all 7 of his Forestry classes to document the lecture material. Linda taught art at a private high school for two years and is now a professional artist. “I wear many hats,” she explains. She’s heavily involved in the Cumberland art community, laboring to cultivate culture in the area through the Allegany Arts Council, Arts at Canal Place, and the Allegany Area Art Alliance.
Linda enjoys working with a wide array of materials. “I’m attempting to combine printmaking, collage, and paper sculpture in 2-dimension in the quality of fine art using only acid-free papers. The challenge is to create as much texture, contrast and dimension as possible within a limited space.” Linda professes that the future of art is full of promise, voicing her eagerness to experience modern creative frontiers as they emerge. “Art is advancing with the advent of new technology and new materials. Artists are able to explore many new materials to create their art.”

Always seeking to promote versatility in her work, Linda is interested in examining peculiar forms of media. “I’ve done monoprints on gelatin plate in the past. Now, they’ve come out with a silicon plate to print from. That’s on my list to explore.” Linda never misses an opportunity to educate herself on exciting new concepts pertaining to her craft. She recently attended a pop-up book workshop called "Creating Pop-Up Books" by Carol Barton. “Pop-up books can combine printmaking and sculpting. There’s a great degree of planning and structuring involved.”

Linda will finish her Art coursework in May and will be focusing on the English aspect of her dual major for the next three semesters in order to achieve her degree. With her spare time she hopes to create a series of children’s books with her newborn grandson, Eli, in mind. "One of the goals on my bucket list is to illustrate and write children's books, either for publication or just for my grandchildren to enjoy." Linda Stewart’s artwork will be featured at the BFA Senior Exhibit scheduled to open March 31st. To learn more about Linda, visit the official Allegany Arts Council website.
