Celebrating the Holiday

It was a night filled with food, fun, and nothing but laughter on November 16, 2011 at the Annual Edgewood Commons Thanksgiving dinner. College students, freshman and seniors alike were all lined up anticipating the delicious traditional Thanksgiving food that the Residential Assistants of Edgewood Commons Apartments prepared. An event like this is one students sign up for in advance or they would miss out on a free meal that includes everything from honey baked ham to homemade macaroni and cheese.

The room was filled with turkey fixtures and balloons of red, yellow, and green colors in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday. Students joined their friends at tables catching up and making jokes. Meanwhile, some students couldn’t wait to taste the food and lined up to receive a plate. Students of all races, nationalities, and religions came together on this one night to enjoy a break from homework and relax with their friends. The Residential Assistants showed nothing but gratitude that so many students came out to support them. When asked if she feels like there was a good turn out of people that came to this event Imani Dunigan stated “Oh yes definitely, it’s what you would expect when you put the words free and food together when talking to any college student. I come to every dinner and I am never unsatisfied.” One of the best parts the meal was undoubtelbly the dessert. There was everything from apple pie to homemade cupcakes with M&Ms to top it off. Needless to say the dessert came and went pretty fast and students seemed extremely pleased with the baking style of Amanda Toms; the baker on the Edgewood staff. When asked how she does such a wonderful job baking all of the desserts Amanda states “I love to bake, it’s a hobby of mine so any chance I get to bake for someone I get in the kitchen with no hesitation.”
By the end of the program everyone was full and ready to return to their apartments, but then came one delicious surprise many students couldn’t resist. There were free plates of turkey being given away to anyone who wanted any. Not to mention the plates of food students were able to take with them. A multitude of students gathered around to get a plate of turkey and were over heard talking about all of the ways turkey can be used and added to a meal. In regards to the turkey David Coppedge, a senior here at Frostburg stated “Man, I could make a turkey sandwich and some more stuff with all this turkey.”
The Annual Edgewood Commons Thanksgiving dinner was an overall success. Many students came out to enjoy being around their peers and bonding over good food. Though this dinner was just a sample before the actual day of Thanksgiving, there was no doubt that what was served at the dinner gave students a little taste of home and made them even more excited to go home and enjoy the holiday with the ones they love.
