Speaking Words of Wisdom Through a Melody

Alexandra Kern
ENGL 336.001

On Tuesday, December 6th the Frostburg Guitar
Ensemble put on a beautiful show in the Pearler Recital Hall of the Performing
Arts Center. The concert started at eight o’ clock and lasted for about an hour
and a half. The seats were nearly full and the audience vibrantly enjoyed the
show. Each performer was presented at the end of the show and recognized for their
contributions. The students who participated were Casey Stahlman, Peter
Spencer-Strong, Seth Carter, Nick Dennison, Andrew Gonzales, Robert Wallace,
Zach Dodge, and Jeff Pomerantz. Other students not named were involved in the ensemble
but did not have a solo performance. These individuals played in the
songs done by the ensemble as a whole. The ensemble played together at the
beginning of the concert with La Cumparista, which is also known as the Tango.
The show was led and directed by Professor Stephen Tunstall.
He is the person who advises and organizes the guitar ensemble. “We work
extremely hard and it’s nice to see such a good turnout,” he stated. Tunstall
is the most talented and spirited guitar player in the ensemble. The viewer can
tell his pure love and enjoyment for the instrument. He performed a solo of his
own and a joint performance with Casey Stahlman. Tunstall played a third time
with Zach Dodge and Robert Wallace. It is obvious his passion for playing and
teaching guitar has benefitted his students in a positive way. He is doing them
a great service by sharing his talent. "I just want to thank my students for being attentive and involved because I could not have done any of this without them," he said.
What made the show extra interesting was the selection of
music played. Everything from the Tango to Arabian Dance from The Nutcracker
was chosen. It was refreshing to see a concert not purely geared towards one
genre of music.
The highlight of the concert was the last three songs played.
Although the audience appreciated the beautiful sound of the guitar, it was nice
to hear favorite tunes. For the end of the performance, the ensemble played classic
songs from The Beatles. A student from the university was brought in to sing
the songs. She sang In My Life, Eleanor Rigby, and the crowd favorite, Let it
Be. When Let it Be started, the entire audience began clapping in unison and
singing along. Ending the concert on such a happy note made the show reach its
highest potential.
The ensemble sounded amazing throughout the entire
concert. It was obvious they took a lot of time and effort to prepare for the
performance. Frostburg State University students should remember to be aware of
on campus events. Many students were there to receive recital credit for a music
class. However, many were there to support their friends in the concert or to
hear live music. On campus events are rewarding and important to be involved
with. Students should continue to support their and peers and themselves by
attending or becoming a part of these free entertainment opportunities. They
will have a great time and take a lot away from the experience.
