Fire Safety

By: Britteny Collins

Students started to fill the empty seats in the Atkinson Room, in Frostburg State Universities Lane Center on Monday evening. Most of the people who attended this program were Greek life, on and off campus. Sigma Alpha Epsilon hosted a fire safety program in honor of the two students that died last year in a tragic off campus housing fire. The Chief of the Frostburg Fire Department was leading this program. He started off saying how one person dies every 169 minutes in the United States in house fires. The chief then told the group he was going to play a informational movie about fire safety that was about 13 minutes long. The movie had college students talking about what they would do in a fire. It also showed how college students die in mostly off campus housing by fires that are started on accident. This movie gave three prime examples of students who died in fires and how they could have been easily prevented if they had taken the proper steps to being fire safety. The students watched in silence and some started to tear up watching the true stories about people dying.

A big issue in off campus housing is there are no working fire alarms, this is an important thing to have in a house, and it could save a life if it is heard in time. After the movie the Chief passed around two papers that had tips for fire safety. Then started to talk about what students can do to prevent fires, and what they should do in case of a fire. He said “I’m preaching Fire alarms, they save lives”. He gave a lot of good tips on how to stay safe. This fire safety program was very informational. After the chief had finished talking Roscoe Makle president of SAE said “We really appreciate everyone for coming out tonight, I know Evan and Alyssa are also thankful for you coming”. Then everyone who attended this program slowly exited the room. Outside of the Atkinson Room, Kristen Drum said when asked what she thought about the program “I learned a lot from this program, I actually came last year too.” Fire safety is no joke.
