By: Grace Herpel Engl 336
Coming from the west side of Baltimore, Marlyand this 2007 Edmondson West Side High graduate is making steps to become the best she can be. Her years are Edmondson Andrea was involved in some extracurricular activities such as Student Government and the Badminton Team, partnered with her best friend play doubles. Through the Baltimore Housing Department she got to attended a lunch in with Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and the Major of Baltimore Shelia Dixon. Also she attended a trade school which she then received a certification to work in Day Cares. A high light of her high school career she says “ I was prom queen”.

“I’m a mommas girl, I love my mom” Andrea said when has what is one thing you want people to know. Andrea is the baby girl of her family with 3 brothers, one of which is younger at age 20, and 3 sisters she is the only one in her family to attended college, other than her Uncle. Now attending Frostburg State University she is majoring in English with hopes of continuing on to graduate school for education. At the University she is a supervisor of Annapolis Hall and is also a Bobcat Ambassador. Now being used to the Frostburg weather when asked by perspective student how the weather is she tells them “You know how you change your clothes every day that’s how the weather is”. On the fun side of things Andrea loves to read and shop. In Baltimore her favorite place to shop is the Gallery in the Inner Harbor and while she is at Frostburg she loves stealing a bargain at Gabes in Cumberland since shopping is limited in Frostburg. This past year she got to go on a cruise to the Bahamas while on her trip she got some shopping done “I got a green Anne Kline watch. I never bought a watch before so when I saw it I had to get it and now I wear it all the time!”
Andrea hopes to become and Middle School teacher and wants to convince her younger brother to attended ITT Tech in the Fall.

Johann Says Bye To Frostburg

By Olivia Flisher, ENGL 336.003

Born in Washington DC, Johann had a couple different homes before his family finally settled down in Rockville, Maryland. He is the oldest child with a younger brother and two younger sisters. His mother is a physical therapist while his dad is in personal training. Johann’s family is very close and always goes to his grandmother’s house is Pennsylvania for the holidays with his many cousins. His favorite holiday to spend there is Christmas. Johann went to Winston Churchill High School and played football and basketball while at school there. He also loves to watch sports. His favorite thing to watch on television is ESPN (http://espn.go.com/). Some of his favorite teams are the Redskins, the Wizards, the Yankees and any University of Maryland, College Park team. Johann’s other favorite things are steak, favorite flavor of ice cream is cake batter and his favorite music to listen to is rap, mostly Lil’ Wayne. He hates flying and Harry Potter. Johann said “I don’t get what’s so good about it. I saw the first Harry Potter movie and thought it was boring.” He also talked about how he would never go see another one again. When asked if he would rather be hot or cold, Johann stated, “I would rather be in the sweltering heat with a clothes someone would wear while going into the frozen tundra rather than being in the freezing cold with no clothes on because then I wouldn’t die.”

Today, Johann is a sophomore at Frostburg and is majoring in Law and Society. He is taking English 336 because he needed it for a higher level for English. His second choice for a school to go to was West Virginia University. He chose Frostburg because it is cheaper. He parents are also happy he came to Frostburg, even though he plans to transfer to Towson next semester because it is closer to home. Johann traveled to Mexico over winter break and said “I loved it! I want to go back again.” In ten years, he sees himself living in Washington DC, maybe married with a kid or two, working as a lawyer or with law enforcement.

She says she likes living at home because it saves money and the only downside is it takes her 15 minutes to get to school. She went to Allegheny high school. Then for collage she went to Mount St Mary's because she got a golf scholarship but she didn't like it. Then she decided to go to Frostburg instead. She said, "it saves money". Maddy played golf since she was 13 she also runs. She ran a half Marathon and finished in 1.53 minutes. She is a mass communication major. She wants to work as a news reporter. She wants to report either on sports or politics. She has applied to a couple of internships like Fox News and ABC. She would like to live in New York or DC but DC would be better because its closer to home. Around school she does a lot of things like writes the sports for The Botton Line the school newspaper. Also she works for the Frostburg channel TV 3 Down to Earth she produces it and thinks of ideas. She also works out of school at Aeropostale at the County Club Mall. Coming from Ireland, Emma Sisk

By Jordan Baxter, ENGL 336

Emma Sisk was a very interesting person to interview. Emma comes from Countipperary county in Ireland. Back in Ireland, Emma worked in a restaurant called Centra. Emma lives at home with her parents and 3 siblings. Emma has one sister named Bernadette, she is 18 years old. Two brothers David and Patrick. (David 16 Patrick 9). Emma goes on to say that she has a great relationship with all of them. Emma’s siblings miss her very much. “My youngest Brother wears the top of my pajamas to bed and my mom will spray my perfume on it so it smells like me.” She says that she misses her family, but she also says that its okay because, “Facebook and Sypke are great inventions, its a great way to keep in touch with my family and friends.”

I asked if the weather there was much different than here, she replied that it is not as bad as Frostburg. Frostburg has a exchange program with her school back home. Emma is working on a degree in Mass Comm. When asked why she was pursuing this major she replied that she hadn’t initially planned on it, she wanted to be a high school teacher. She said she had a Mass Comm class involved and didn’t want to take it, but she ended up doing much better than she thought and found it interesting. Emma wants to open up her own business someday. She is 21 years of age and enjoys going out with her friends for a night of drinking, or just going to the gym to get in a good workout. Emma attended Presentation Secondary School in Mitchelstown County Cork. While talking to Emma about the differences about school back home and up here she tells me that at home, her and her friends rent a house instead of living at home or in a dorm, and goes to school Monday through Friday and everyone goes home on the weekends. I asked Emma if she liked being on her own all the time now, she replied that "people told me it would be difficult, and I now agree with them."

Emma currently lives in Cambridge Hall on campus. When I asked her if she enjoyed living in the dorms she replied, “Its....alright.” After this semester Emma will be leaving Frostburg State University to go back to Ireland to graduate, and pursue her goals of one day owning her own business.

Miss Francis Scott Key

By: Andrea Lynch, ENGL 338

Grace Herpel, from Garrett County, is a Mass Communication major with a specialization in Broadcasting and Journalism. Grace and her two brothers attended the same elementary and high school, because they are triplets, two would be in the same class while one would be in a class by themselves. "Every other year one of us got a chance to be separate", said Grace. Now, Grace and her brothers are spread apart; she attends Frostburg State University and her brothers attend two separate universities. This gives them a chance to grow individually, but separates them for a length of time.

While in High School Grace played soccer and danced. During her time as a soccer player in high school Grace received two concussions. One was from playing co-ed soccer; "I was taken out by a guy", said Grace. The second came from playing her High School's rival team. Even though things seemed a little rough for Grace with soccer, her dance teacher sparked her interest in a new way to express herself, by competing in Pageants. Grace's first pageant was for the title of Miss Deep Creek. Grace has continually competed in pageants since her senior year of High School. Even though Grace did not win the first two pageants she competed in, she continued and realized that "this is something I need to work at, it's something that is not going to come easily." With that mind set, Grace has won the title of Charm of the Chesapeake, and this past weekend Miss Francis Scott Key. Grace feels that her major and her current passion "kind of goes hand in hand"; she is able to gain connections that will be helpful in her career choice in the future.

With this passion as her main focus besides school, Grace has gained many chances to give back. She has volunteered with the Special Olympics for Maryland and taught ski lessons to the blind. "These people are doing things that others thought were off limits to them". Outside of competing for titles, Grace was a part of the Redskins cheerleaders’ spirit squad for one year and still is a mentor to youth.

Cedric Crawley hopes to continue traveling

By Jess Growden, ENGL 336.002

“If you see any cars you don’t know, you come in the house,” Cedric Crawley's mother told him. A native of Bowie, Maryland, Cedric was in the seventh grade when the notorious D.C. sniper was actively gunning down victims. Cedric attended the very middle school where Iran Brown, also a student, was shot and injured. By some stroke of luck, Cedric’s usual bus was late that morning and he was safe. However, he did witness the hole left in the glass when the bullet hit the school.

Cedric’s mother was quite shaken by the whole ordeal and, like many concerned parents; she insisted that he spend most of his free time close to home or inside pursuing safer activities. This could be what cultivated the philosophical side of Cedric. He mostly enjoys writing and thinking, saying, “I am always running things through my head.” He has a habit of jotting down ideas and things that he learns into composition notebooks and loose papers. He is always Googling things and his friends admire his ability to bring up random, yet relevant facts.

In 2007, Cedric visited China as a People to People International Student Ambassador, a program started by Dwight D. Eisenhower. He traveled with a group of like-minded teenagers who shared his interest in seeing the world. Student Ambassadors spend weeks studying and preparing for their journey. On the trip, landmarks and museums are visited and there is a home-stay portion where the American students spend a few nights with Chinese families, thus gaining a more intimate experience with Chinese culture. For many, the trip is life changing. Cedric was no different. “I changed, but me and my friends were still cool,” he said of returning home to everyday life.

His experiences abroad definitely influenced his choice of career. His dream job is to travel and write about his adventures. He often gets melancholy about the current state of the world and how hopeless some of the problems tend to be. In China, Cedric, like many on their first travels overseas, witnessed a type of poverty that is not as prominent in the United States. He would like to bring to light the situations of others, perhaps with his writing. As of now, Cedric, 21, is a junior at Frostburg State University, studying Professional Writing. Of his college experience he said, “It’s a lot more quiet [than at home] but I enjoy the peace. I learned to appreciate the silence.”
