Frostburg State's senior art exhibit “Eclectic” featured at the Stephanie Ann Roper gallery on campus

by Shawn Pillai

Frostburg State University’s annual senior art exhibit, launched Saturday, March 31, 2012, features the incredible work of five art students graduating from Frostburg this May. Eclectic demonstrates a wide variety of styles. Artists Jodi Akers, Lindsey Crabtree, Kyler Daniels, Heather Miller, and Linda Stewart have poured their limitless talent onto a broad array of media. Using techniques such as sculpting, painting, printmaking and illustration, the students have filled the gallery with stunning pieces highlighting subjects like the human body, animals, and abstractions. Marking the completion of their years at FSU, their work is showcased on everything from canvas to old road signs morphed into modern treasures.

“The entire exhibit is just amazing,” states Brianna Lane, a Health and Physical Education Freshman viewing the spectacle. “It’s pretty great what they can do. I love all the pieces made out of metal, but so far my favorite piece is number 9,” she affirms while gesturing toward a colorful work on canvas featuring a pair of large cat eyes superimposed over a flower. Brianna holds an interest in art through a class she is taking on the subject this Spring semester.

Piece #9
Information Technology Freshman Antonio Proctor claims that he is not an expert on art, but he enjoys being an amateur enthusiast. “In my opinion, the coolest piece I’ve seen today is number 50, a woman’s silhouette made out of the wire mesh from a screen door.” Antonio and Brianna stopped by to view the gallery on their way to class. Students looking to recover their good moods from the dreary winter weather are becoming more active on campus with each passing warm Spring day.

Artist Linda Stewart, whose work is featured in the exhibit, professes her appreciation for the talent of her fellow graduates. "It was a delight to work with the other student artists to bring together the Eclectic show. The four of us have very different styles and work in different media. It was great to see how well it all came together into a cohesive show." Linda, who is also involved in Cumberland art organizations such as the Allegany Arts Council, Arts at Canal Place, and the Allegany Area Art Alliance, has been honing her craft for many years. “I’m attempting to combine printmaking, collage, and paper sculpture in 2-dimension in the quality of fine art using only acid-free papers. The challenge is to create as much texture, contrast and dimension as possible within a limited space.” To learn more about Linda, visit the official Allegany Arts Council website.

Eclectic is open to the public from 1:00pm to 4:00pm from Saturday, March 31st to Wednesday, April 4th at the Stephanie Ann Roper gallery in the Fine Arts building on campus.
