Written by Natasha Okpala, ENG 336, 002

On October 21, 2011, Comedian and actor Guy Torry came to Frostburg State University (FSU) to perform for the students on behalf of Black Student Alliance (BSA). You may now him the movie “Life” starring Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy and on “1st amendment standup comedy show. The show started around 9:30 p.m. and the crowd was pumped to hear him perform. He came out funny already. Guy performed for about an hour and then did a Q&A with anyone that wanted to ask him questions about his life and how he became a comedian/actor. He had told us,

“My big break was on def comedy jam performing with Martin Lawrence and other comedians”, Torry said as he answered a student’s question. Also, he made another big break when he wrote a skit for the show “Martin”. The episode was about when they went on an island for a vacation and were being chased by some animal. It was so funny. Guy Torry grew up in St. Louis, but resides right now in LA.

“My brother inspired me to start acting”, Guy answered. There a lot of people actually really asking some great questions after his show was over. His show was hilarious. No one could stop laughing at all, and he was picking on some people and that made the show even funnier. There was also some jokes he was saying that were getting a little too intense, so he had to back away from the jokes, even though some people wanted him to keep going.

He had told us that one of his most embarrassing moments was when he bombed before hit the stage at a younger age. Guy is really a chill person and very funny, and shorter in person, which was funny to me. Also, he always has a smile on his face and I think that is one of the things me and other people like about him. He took pictures and did autographs for some students and didn’t just rush off like some other comedians do. He answered more questions and met some students.

“I have two new specials coming soon. Stuck on stupid and F**k it, I’m 40”, Guy Torry announced. The show went by so quick, but you didn’t notice because you were just having a great time listening to the jokes and laughing so hard that you fall the chair. The whole show was arranged by BSA and they did a wonderful job. The entire show and performance was great and had everyone in the room laughing very hard. We all told him that he needs to come back to FSU another time and he told us he will surely come back.

Guy Torry is a very funny, energetic comedian/actor and has made great shows and movies. He is now doing shows and tours and working on his new shows. Hopefully, we will all have Guy Torry come back to FSU and perform for us another year.

“Thank you everyone. You have been a great crowd”, he said as he left the stage.
