Wednesday night, as the students of Frostburg eagerly prepared
for their night on the town in their variety of costumes, there was a special
event that took place at the Lane Center.
“Late at Lane” was a festive, Halloween celebration on campus that was
open to any individual who didn't feel like trick-or-treating, or just simply
wanted to lounge around and hang with other students. This event had lots of activities, which
included card games and karaoke. There were
also light, delicious refreshments that went rather quickly as the festivities continued
throughout the night. One of the most charismatic events of the night, however,
was the karaoke portion.
At first glance, not many students took interest in this
activity. They were either enjoying the
refreshments, or tailing closely with their clique of friends. On the far right side of the lane center,
where you would first walk in, the karaoke station was set up in a welcoming
way, with lots of colors and lights. There were two mic stands set up for the
potential performers, and two TV’s on the left and right of the stage
displaying the lyrics for the performers.
There was also a stereo with enough bass to move the entire room!
Though the event was not occupied largely at first, a group
of students took the stage and performed the first karaoke song of the night, “Till
the World Ends”. As the charismatic group
of students sang their hearts out in their colorful costumes, Veronica
Williams, a freshman here at Frostburg, looked on, trying to contain her
laughter. “These people are very entertaining,” Veronica said with a smile. “The
way they are performing is very uplifting; I think it’s making the crowd
actually want to enjoy themselves.”
After this group of students performed, it seemed like the karaoke
portion of Late at Lane started to get more popular. Soon, the line to sign up for karaoke was
longer than when the activity first started!
One performance after another got the growing onlookers on their feet
dancing, laughing, and enjoying themselves.
One of these happy onlookers was Shalaan Powell, who also participated
in the karaoke night himself. “I’m
having a lot of fun here, this is the best Halloween night I've had in a while.”
He said out of breath, just getting done performing a powerful rendition of
Tina Turners “Proud Mary”. Other
selections performed were “No One” by Alicia Keys and “The Boy Is Mine” by
Brandy and Monica.
Soon the karaoke night had to end, as with the rest of the
festivities at the Late at Lane program.
Other stations were starting to wind down, and the director of the
karaoke night announced that it was time to determine the winners. The winners of the night would be decided
based on how much applause the audience gave the acts. After the audience roared for their favorite
acts, five of the acts were selected, and got prizes. After all was said and done, everyone left
happy and joyful, concluding an eventful night.
