Election Day 2012 has arrived, and the ballot is
filled with many controversies for Frostburg State University students. One topic
in heated debate is Question 7, regarding whether or not to expand gambling in
Maryland. Michael Lawson, a freshman majoring in Biology at FSU said, “I didn’t
vote this year, but I heard something about it on TV. I think it’s a good
thing, because it uses the money to help schools.” The primary purpose of the
expansion is to raise revenue for education. Another student, Josh Biser, an undecided
freshman from West Virginia voted early on Saturday and he thinks Question 7
would be good for Maryland. He explained, “I’m for it just because it raises
money for schools. It also has its down sides like the effects on families.” The
referendum will increase the number of video lottery terminals, increase the
number of licenses, and allow table games to licensed operators. A major
concern for voters is how the funds are appropriated. Psychology senior, Katie Magruder, is planning
on voting later today and said, “I’m on the fence. I don’t know if the money
will really go to education.” It seems
the overall issue with Question 7 isn’t an ethical dilemma with gambling, but
how the revenue from gambling is used. By 8:00pm when polls close tonight we
will know how those people on the fence decided.
