Apparently, there IS enough time in the day

game during her time off.
Myra Derbyshire is a senior Mass Communications major with a focus in Radio Industry and Audio Production. The Fredrick native is the daughter of Myra and Bill Derbyshire. Hard work is no foreign concept to the Derbyshire family. Myra’s mother works as a doctor for the National Institute of Health doing cancer research. Her father, Bill, is a social worker who specializes in intellectual disability and physically and mentally handicapped children. Myra’s older brother and only sibling, Angus, is currently attending law school at the University of Baltimore. She remained very enthusiastic and lighthearted while discussing her family. It is clear that she and her family are very close.
Myra has a myriad of jobs and multiple interests. Over the summer, Myra works as an assistant teacher and does respite care. During the school year, she works three jobs and plays lacrosse for the college while still finding time to focus on her studies. She works for the University Advancement Office eight hours a week. She also puts in twelve hours a week at the universities radio station, WFWM (91.9 FM). Lastly, Myra works for the Allegheny Radio Corporation as a board operator and teaching assistant where she puts in 30 hours per week. As far as lacrosse is concerned, Myra has played since the age of five. Judging from her consistently sporty attire, it is easy to see that no amount of work or schoolwork would keep her from engaging in the sport. However, balancing school and lacrosse is no easy task. Myra has “to sacrifice lacrosse for work and vice versa every week.” She says she has “worked out a schedule where [she] can split the hours up half and half.” It is safe to assume that her easygoing personality plays a role in her ability to manage it all.
Luckily for Myra, her interests coincide with her career aspirations. She loves music and does not discriminate. She says, “As as a radio industry focus, I think it is important to appreciate all genres of music.” Along with listening to music, Myra also enjoys producing music and attending music festivals.
But let all of Myra’s hard work not be in vain. While she is unsure of what her ultimate career goal will be, she says, “I think I want to be an on air personality or broadcast journalist. Who knows, maybe the next Katie Curic news broadcaster!” Myra has big dreams and a parental support system to match. Her parents are a driving force behind everything she does. She says, “My parent’s work ethic has influenced almost every decision I’ve made. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today having the opportunities I have.”
