Xinpei Yu: Ni Hao from China

By: Tavarsha Timmons, ENGL 336.001

This year Frostburg is host to several students from the Hunan Normal University. One of these students is Xinpei Yu. After a 13 hour plane ride from her home on the east coast of China, Xinpei is happy to be among Americans students here on campus. When asked what she liked most about American she responded “the people especially on campus, the professors and the students are very kind.”  Xinpei is a yearlong exchange student studying English with a concentration in Literature. This semester she is taking American Literature, British Literature, Linguistics, French, Journalism, and Women's Studies. Not only does she take these course,s but she and her friends also go to "the church, Faith Presbyterian Church, where the offer English class. It’s just a good opportunity to learn more English and talk to more native Americans,” she says when asked.
Between taking 7 courses and extra classes at the church, Xinpei still finds time to fit in going to the gym and her favorite hobbies, which include photography, traveling, movies, and reading. Her favorite movies are Spirited away and Malena. Spirited away is a Japanese anime kids film produced by Hayao Miyazaki and Malena is an Italian film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. She states while laughing, “One is an adult movie that shows the irony of society and the other is a cartoon for children.” She views all of her favorite films on a Chinese website that gives subtitles for each film. Xinpei also loves reading. One of her favorite authors is Jane Austen. She expressed how she liked to also read certain books and then watch the movie after to compare them. Along with her love for Jane Austen she also stated she liked “ Harry Potter and Jane Eyre.”
While this is Xinpei’s first time in the United States this is not the first time that she has been away from home. She explains that she “live on the east coast of China, but my university is in the center of China. It takes me an hour by air to get to school.” Coming to America she left behind her father and mother.

Below are links to the movie website she uses, her two favorite movies, and about the exchange program with her university and frostburg.
