Julian Gates is a 22-year-old Junior
here at Frostburg State University from Allegany College, hometown being Cumberland.
He wants to get his Bachelors and then go on to his Masters at Frostburg. He says
he is “taking the scenic route to [his] degree.” His major is elementary education, and he likes the idea of job security in this profession. Julian wants to teach in Annapolis in the future. He picked that location because he says, “it seems like a busy place.” He wants to influence young kids for the better there. He lives at home with his family and his older brother who just recently moved back. When asked how he likes having his older brother back home he says,
“I like it but sure it will get old.” His favorite sport is basketball and favorite football team is the Redskins.
Despite the great future goals he has for himself, he has also went through
a few obstacles that have changed his life. In high school, he did cross
country, track, and basketball. He says he could have went to school for
running at Hagerstown Community College or Robert Morris University but decided not too. After doing sports all of high school he was tired of it. Looking back on sports, he misses not being able to play and
regrets not taking the opportunity. “I guess everything’s for a reason though," he says. Nevertheless, he likes his major in elementary education so
far.
Another difficulty Julian faced was when his younger brother
was diagnosed with cancer. His family thought he just had mono and came to find out it was something totally different. He went to the doctor and a knot in his neck was found. It turned out to be cancer. His brother went
for treatment in New York where Julian went to visit for a month and the rest
of his family for five months. His brother had cancer for a total of 15 months and
survived. Julian says, “It was a very hard time.” But thankfully, his brother is
doing well and is enjoying studying culinary arts at Allegany College. Aside from Julian's obstacles
this future teacher is on the rise to a great career.
