Draping the walls of the Stephanie Ann Roper gallery, located in the Fine Arts building of Frostburg State University, were fantastical paintings, illustrations, examples of printmaking and various other artistic mediums which these five artists have created during their time at Frostburg State University. Sculptures of womanly forms stuck out from the stark white walls giving you not just a visual but a three dimensional illusion. Paintings on massive yellow street signs hung randomly around the gallery were a shock for most to see at first but on closer inspection offered fine art lightly painted over the bright yellow and black most are accustomed to passing alongside the road. Several people were overheard wondering amongst their group of friends how the artist had acquired these signs. This lead to many more questions and comments ranging from, “ Do you think she stole them?” to “Maybe her parents own a street sign company”. The street signs were definitely a talking point for gallery visitors.
Lindsey Crabtree, a senior illustrator, offered a little more to those who visited the gallery. She took some of her illustrations and made them into both postcards and greeting cards. While cleaning up the Eclectic show, Lindsey was seen rushing around to collect all of her artwork and her quirky array of cards. “I will be back by 6 to get all of this, I promise”, she hurriedly stated while quickly moving out of the gallery while the next group carted their artworks in slowly. “Good luck guys. It’s really not as bad as it seems. It’s easy”.
Some of the most impressive work was by Linda Stewart. Intricate pieces of paper delicately placed into the most beautiful patterns or figures. Linda was asked how she felt about transporting these works of art around campus, especially with it raining on a few days of setting up the gallery; she was fairly relaxed about it despite the delicate nature of her works. “Of course it makes me a little nervous but I have had them framed in a way that the work doesn’t get bothered. Plus I use cardboard and wrap them in thick brown paper”, said Linda without showing a hint of nervousness.
Anyone who walked into the gallery not knowing the basis of the show would not automatically assume a group of soon-to-graduate seniors had put the show together. The show was both cohesive and visually stunning. The artists had both the individual talent in fine arts and the group technical creativity necessary to create the “Eclectic” atmosphere for this spectacular show.
