Frostburg State’s basketball team gave us a preview of what should be a great season for the team during their very first game with a convincing 76-48 victory. On November 15, the Bobcats took on McDaniel College of Westminster, MD. FSU came out the gates strong and never looked back once the ball was tipped off. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead as junior Desean Antoine hit 2 three pointers in the opening minutes of the game, which had the crowd in frenzy. As I sat in the crowd a friend named Greg Champion stated “Ay, he is the key to their season. Nobody can stop him off the dribble and when he comes out shooting like this early in the game you can kiss your chances of slowing him down goodbye.”
Halfway through the first half McDaniel only managed to score two points, with the score already out of reach at 23-2. Frostburg was too quick and powerful for the Green Terror as they would consistently outrebound and start fast breaks and get easy buckets. Going into the half Frostburg was up 40-17. I overheard one spectator talking about Christian “Boo” Jackson. “Imagine if Boo was ruled ineligible to play due to transfer regulations. We would be up by 40 right now,” stated the fan. Jackson is a former Division 1 player from the DC area would have been the undeniable X-factor for the Bobcats.
At the start of the second half you could see that FSU came out ready to finish off the visiting McDaniel. At one point the Green Terror were able to cut the lead to 15, but that would be close as they would get as FSU rolled on to a 76-48 victory. According to FrostburgSports.com the Bobcats were led by Senior Maurice Williams with 20 points, 11 rebounds while shooting a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe. Antoine added 16 respectively.
Since then Frostburg has went 1-3. While they now sit at 2-3 overall, the season still looks promising. Being in my 3rd year at FSU, my friends and I have seen so much growth in the players who have been here this entire time. It’s so much potential on this team and no one is stopping them, but themselves, so don’t count the Bobcats out yet even with the slow start.
