On Tuesday, December 6th Frostburg State University held a concert for the guitar and studio ensemble. The concert was held in the Performing Arts Center and was directed by Professor Stephen Tunstall. The guitar and studio ensemble demonstrated their ability to play the guitar in front of a full audience.
The concert started off with the whole ensemble playing a tango piece together, without the being directed by Professor Tunstall. After grabbing the audience’s attention, the solo performances began. Once the first three short pieces were performed by some of Frostburg’s students, it was clear to see that songs were ordered based on the performers skill levels. Ensemble member by the names of Andrew Gonzalez and Robert Wallace were the first to impress the crowd. Both of the performers played their solos with no notes to reference back to.
A few performances later Professor Tunstall was scheduled to perform a song called Asturias by Isaac Albeniz. Tunstall showed off how passionate he is about the guitar while he played with no music notes to read. Tunstall moved with every strum of his guitar. He kept on moving to the rhythm of the music when Casey Stahlman accompanied him for a song called Milonga. Afterwards, ensemble members Zach Dodge and Robert Wallace joined Tunstall. They played two very well performed pieces until the entire guitar ensemble performed together again.
The ensemble impressed the audience with three Paul McCartney and John Lennon composed songs. Although Tunstall did not join the ensemble to play “In My Life,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Let it Be,” the ensemble was accompanied by a singer. Looking around it was not hard to see that the audience enjoyed the singer being a part of the concert. The audience started to sing and even clap along with the concert members. Students clearly enjoyed what they were hearing, even Junior Crystal Nwabuko. “I thought the concert was great because it showed different levels of talent,” says Nwabuko. All the talent in the guitar ensemble made for a great show that I would enjoy seeing again.
