The Many Interests of Wayne Cottman
By Brittany Buckel, ENG 336-002
Wayne Cottman is a junior at Frostburg State University from Baltimore, Maryland, studying Mass Communication and Public Relations. Wayne transferred to FSU from Susquehanna University. Susquehanna University was a lot like Frostburg, “in the middle of nowhere and always cold.” Wayne wanted to be the first person in his family to graduate out of state. However, Susquehanna did not live up to his expectations; students have to live on campus, the tuition is very expensive, and you have to get permission from administration to have a party. He stated that at Susquehanna “I wasted two years of my life.” Wayne is enjoying Frostburg much more saying that it’s bigger than Susquehanna, so he can meet more people. Frostburg is not too big where he feels like a number, though.
Though he is studying Mass Communication and Public Relations, Wayne is still unsure of what he wants to pursue when he graduates. He wants to work with television or radio but he isn’t exactly sure where, so he’s taking classes to see what’s best for him. He would like to work as a sports broadcaster, but doesn’t like being in front of the camera. During the summer, Wayne will have an internship with ABC. He will be working with audio and a little bit behind the camera.
Wayne has many interests. One of his favorite hobbies is playing basketball. Wayne played basketball in high school, but does not want to play in college saying that he was “a good game player,” however, he hated practice. Along with playing basketball, Wayne also likes watching sports. The only television channel he watches is ESPN. Some of the sports he enjoys watching include basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and tennis. Wayne also enjoys traveling. The top places he would like to visit in the future include Brazil, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Australia. The only downfall to traveling is that he hates packing and unpacking. Wayne likes writing poetry; he writes to relieve stress on occasion. Wayne says that poetry has contributed to his ability to rap saying, “I’m not a rapper but I can freestyle because of poetry.”
With Wayne’s friendly personality and motivation to succeed, he will have many great opportunities in the future.
