The thirteenth annual Beautify the 'Burg took place on
Saturday, May 3, 2014. Many volunteers, including Frostburg State students,
Frostburg State Greek organizations, and community members, spent all morning
cleaning and touching up the streets of Frostburg. Volunteers braved the winds
and chilly weather to welcome spring to Frostburg. The event is sponsored by the City of Frostburg,
Frostburg State University, FSU Greek Council, and Frostburg Sustaining Campus
& Community Dialogue Series. The event is run by Christine Werner, FrostburgFirst, and Alex Williams, volunteer coordinator.
Volunteers
started to arrive around 8 am and were greeted with a free breakfast of coffee,
bananas, and donuts from Lorenzo’s Bakery located in Frostburg. Each member who
was registered received a bright yellow t-shirt sporting a bright, smiling sun
designed by Sam Rose, a third grader at Frost Elementary. Once almost everyone
was there, event managers split people up and assigned them their tasks for the
day. Tasks included sweeping sidewalks, planting flowers, painting walls and
curbs, mulching nearby playgrounds, and picking up trash blowing around.
“I loved
getting to do this this year! We got to paint some walls behind the library and
even though I’m short and can barely reach, I’m still having a blast!”
commented Lauren Roeder as she took a short break.
Volunteers
worked for three long hours. After their shift, volunteers were treated to a
lunch at City Place along with live music and guest speakers. Beautify the 'Burg
is a great experience and a great way to gain pride for the city. It’s a great
way for all types of members in the community to get together and give back to
the community they are living in.
Beautify the 'Burg takes place every year and each year gains quite a few more volunteers.
Keep your eyes peeled for the date of the 2015 Beautify the 'Burg.
